In the pocket…? Par 4

In the pocket?  You might be asking, “…What in the world is ‘in the pocket?‘  And,  for goodness sake, what does that seemingly nonsensical expression have to do with golf or me?

Payne Stewart’s pose after that win at the 1999 U.S. Open is immortalized with a statue at Pinehurst.

In the pocket, as Wikipedia puts it is a “rhythmic patterning” or “feel” and “an intuitive sense” of “a cycle in motion” that emerges from “carefully aligned concurrent rhythmic patterns”  I know, I know, thank you Larry for clearing that up!

Hang with me here, to put it in a less formal yet much easier explanation, in musical terms, it is the perfect blend of rhythm and notes that emotes a sense of joy and exuberance when experienced which allows one to feel as though they were in the music, not merely experiencing it.  How’s that?

Okay give me one more try, it’s the “Groove.  To me a perfect example of the sense of being in  the pocket or Groove is a beautifully orchestrated perfectly coordinated Golf Swing.

PGA Golfer and friend of Payne Stewart, Johnny Miller described Stewart’s golf swing this way: His gorgeous, perfectly timed swing was one of those motions that could last forever.  I always observed his swing a thing of beauty”, and I would add, almost like a beautiful symphony, one I could experience again and again.

One could describe Payne’s swing as “in the pocket”

Interestingly enough, it wasn’t Payne’s golf swing that has permanently carved out a place of endearment in my heart.  It was the fact that as beautiful as his swing was—he tragically died in an airplane crash in October of 1999—it was how his spiritual life had moved “into the pocket” during the last portion of his life.  His faith had come alive and it was having a positive effect on his attitude, his play, his family and the lives of those around him.

It was one of the most dramatic spiritual transformations I have ever witnessed and fifteen years later people are still talking about the positive effects this transformation had as they observed him move “into the pocket” in his relationship with his Maker.

That same kind of move “into the Pocket” with the Creator of all things is available to all of us.  We need simply to ask Him to join us, to be our leader, recognize that his ways are infinitely better than ours and follow his lead.  I know from personal experience the positive transformative effect this choice has made in my life.

Are you interested in some transformative improvement in your life? Are you interested in moving into the pocket with our Maker?

  1. What a great way to describe it . . . “in the pocket” with the Creator of all things! That
happened to me many, many years ago. He’s still inviting me to “play” life with Him! Thanks for your insightful Blog, Larry. I always enjoy “reading your mind.” Blessings.
